OPEN UP!

The main theme of Roverway 2009 is ‘Open up’. We can look at Open Up from many different perspectives. All our activities will be linked to one of those themes in one way or another. It is our hope that you will have opened up to all of these by the end of your time at Roverway.

Open up your mind
Open up your heart
Open up to challenges
Open up to culture
Open up to creativity
Open up to environment

The theme open up your mind is linked to all the things you need to do with your mind, to discover your possibilities, to explore ideas and innovations. Projects linked to this will explore power plants, computers, cameras and new technologies.

The theme open up your heart to new friendship, getting to know each other, learning to care for each other. Projects linked to this could include service with children, elderly people, disabled people and others in need of your friendly face.

It is very important to keep on challenging yourself through-out life. It is very easy to sit back in your comfortable chair, in your comfortable position and enjoy life from there, but that means you will be stuck in the same place for a very long time. By opening up to challenges you will push yourself to new limits and great experiences. (you are never too old to stop challenging yourself) The things that challenge us are very different from one person to the next person, some would need the challenge of climbing the highest mountain in Iceland, when for others it is a great challenge to travel all the way to Iceland from their home country.

The theme to open up to culture. The world today is different to the world which BP found, with new technologies, easy transport and founding of the European community. The world of young people does not only include their home village, town or country, but actually they belong to a much bigger community of Europe and the world. Our world is shrinking. As we explore more cultures of different nations we all have things in common, even tough with still have things which make us different. Roverway will provide an excellent opportunity to open up and learn more about different cultures.

In this competitive world that we live in today, it is becoming more and more important for young people to be creative, to be able to express themselves as individuals. Opening up to creativity
is becoming a skill which is becoming increasingly important in the job market to allow young people to stand out. You can practice these skills through different activities such as art, craft, music, drama, speech and problem solving.

It is very important for us to be thinking about our environment all the time through everything that we do and to do our best to protect it and preserve it. It is especially important for young people to as the earth is their future home. In Iceland we will look at environmentally friendly power sources including hydropower and geo-thermal power. The high steam pressure and great thermal power are used for heating up fresh water and for generating electricity. At Roverway we will do our best to recycle our waste and to reduce our impact on the earth. Some service projects will involve tree planting, making paths and restoring areas of natural beauty.
