Frequently Asked Questions

Here we have Frequently Asked Questions. They are not many at the time but we will add qeustions in the coming weeks and months.

About Iceland

How do we get to Iceland?

There are daily flights to and from Iceland from 20 cities in mainland Europe and North America. Flying time is 2-4 hours from mainland Europe and 5 hours from North America. Icelandair has daily flights year around and Icelandexpress has daily flights to London and Copanhagen. Other airlines offer seasonal services.
You can find more information on travelling to Iceland here.

How do we get from the airport?

There are flybusses running between Keflavik Airport and Reykjavik all the time. You can book your flybus with us and we will either give you tickets for the flybus or if there are many teams arriving at the same time we will organize special busses just for RoverWay participants.

What Currency do you have in Iceland?

Here in Iceland we have Icelandic Krona (ISK). If you want to buy yourselves souvenirs or need some other spending money you need to have some Kronas or you can also use Credit cards as most common credit cards are accepted almost everywhere in Iceland. We are a very electronic nation. :)

Is the water safe to drink?

All water from taps is safe to drink. Water from most rivers and streams are also safe to drink. You should however avoid drinking water from glacial rivers and hot springs. Basic rule is: if it looks clean and dosen´t smell you can drink it.

How is the weather in Iceland?

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland enjoys a mild ocean climate. It is cool in summer (Reykjavik July average 10.6°C - 51°F, maximum 24.3°C - 76°F) and fairly mild in winter (Reykjavik January average 0,5°C - 31°F, maximun 9,9°C - 49°F). See "Weather in Iceland".

About RoverWay

Is there public transport (or other organized transport) available between Reykjavík and the Ulfljotsvatn Scout Centre?  If yes, could you tell us how to find out about fares and schedules?

There is no public transportation to Ulfljotsvatn. As the transportation from Ulfljotsvatn to Reykjavik after Roverway is included we will arrange transportation for you back to Reykjavik when you want to leave in the three days after Roverway. We will be offering tours from Ulfljotsvatn in the three days after the event, but it will be limited to one tour a day.

Is the Ulfljotsvatn Scout Centre accessible only by 4WD cars or also by 2WD cars?

Ulfljótsvatn is accessible by all cars

How long does it take to get by car from Reykjavík (city center) to the Ulfljotsvatn Scout Centre?

There are two roads you can take to Ulfljotsvatn, one takes about 40 minutes and the road is very steep in parts and not all bus drivers will drive that road. The other way takes about an hour and goes around the mountains.

You now state on the roverway website that participants can stay three additional days on the Ulfljotsvatn Scout Centre after the roverway. Does this include the night from July 30 to July 31 or is it meant to cover the days until (and including) July 30 only?

The night from July 30th to July 31st are included. If you want to stay the weekend you will have to pay campsite fee.

Will the public holiday for Verslunarmannahelgi in 2009 be on August 1/2, 2009?

Yes, Verslunarmannhelgi will be this weekend, it is always the first weekend of August.

Will the Shop & Office Workers' Holiday be on August 3, 2009? If yes, should we be prepared to a countrywide Sunday schedule on such day?

Yes the Shop & Office Workers Holiday will be on August 3rd 2009.You might have to prepare for a Sunday schedule but I believe that most tourist places will keep their schedule even if it is holiday. There should not be a problem to get food anywhere. They are not as strict as they use to be on closing everything down. But every office will be closed.

How many leaders can each group have?

Each group can have a maximum of 2 leaders that are 23 years old or older. We want the Journeys to belong to the participants and not fill them with older leaders.
